Vision Care for Homeless People has appointed Elaine Styles as Chair of the charity which she helped to found six years ago. Formerly the charity’s Operations Trustee, she will combine her new role with her part time work as an optometrist at Moorfields and within practice at Specs of Kensington.
Shaneela Chana has taken on the role of Operations Trustee, having joined the charity in 2005.
Elaine’s priorities are for the charity to consolidate the existing clinics within London and Birmingham by developing a greater base of volunteer optometrists and dispensing opticians, and to look at new regional centres –
“There is an enormous demand for the care that we are providing in the community, particularly as the recession bites and more vulnerable people are finding themselves homeless. Homeless people – who come from all walks of life including accountants and teachers – need our services. Many are missing out on not just vital health screening but also on something as basic as reading specs to enable them to fill out job applications,” she said.
