We are looking for optometrists to volunteer occasionally, once a month or so, in our clinics in Brighton, Birmingham, Exeter, Leeds and London.

“Thursday is my best day of the week.” Niamh runs a successful optician’s
practice. Once a month on a Thursday, she drives to Brighton where she offers free eye tests to homeless people who drop into St Stephen’s Hall and need help. Sometimes she sees 4 people, sometimes twice that number, but however many it is, she says, with an enthusiasm which is utterly infectious: “I love Thursdays, and get back so much more than I give.”

We need regional ambassadors who are keen to promote the charity message, and to raise much needed funds for Vision Care for Homeless People.

VCHP has grown to provide clinics in Birmingham, London, Brighton, Manchester and Exeter. New centres are envisaged in other locations when funds and volunteers are in place to support them. We are keen to hear from people – perhaps not from optics – who are keen to raise awareness in schools, clubs and in communities which might fundraise for us. We are very open minded for them to organise and promote events according to their own inclinations and skills. The experience of putting together charitable bids would also be a significant advantage.

Volunteer clinic managers who can support optical professionals to run clinics on a regular basis are sought. You will be organising appointments, recording patients’ details, helping them choose and fit spectacles and generally making everything run smoothly. You do not need to be in the optical industry – we will train you. The satisfaction you will feel after a half day clinic, having helped a homeless person feel safer, access learning or take an important step towards securing a job, cannot be beaten.
